Please join me in welcoming Judith Graves, an award-winning playwright, screenwriter and author for an interview about her newest installment of her Skinned series, which launches today with LEAP books.
Describe your favorite scene from Skin of My Teeth: Volume 1. Why is it your favorite?
Actually, there are two scenes I love in SOMT: Volume 1 – both are linked [at the end of this interview]. There’s the moment Eryn discovers Alec and Wade have been fighting, and then, through a bonus scene made available at the end of Volume 1, we get to see that fight play out from Alec’s point of view.
This is the first time I’ve offered “extras” like this, where the reader is able to access multiple character viewpoints, at key moments in the story, to give insights and (maybe!) reveal a few secrets. Up to now, Eryn is the main way we experience the world of Redgrave. It’s fun to get behind the scenes and see things unfold that she isn’t privy to.
SOMT sounds like a steamy romance. What do you believe is the key to writing a good love story?
Conflict. Passion. High stakes. I love it when characters with opposite beliefs, dreams, or fears are thrown together to reach a similar goal/outcome. Then it’s just a matter of letting them push and pull at each other, and watch the sparks fly.
Why do you choose to write YA? or What’s so special about YA?
I write in several genres, as well as for adults – and I’m working on a few middle grade projects, so I’m comfortable writing for just about any readership. However, young adult fiction is my go to. It’s where I can settle in and tell a story quite organically – without stressing over the tone/voice.
It’s also what I read the most. So…maybe you write what you read?
Would you describe SOMT as a survival story?
I guess. Sure. 😉 Eryn certainly battles for her life in each book, but what she’s really surviving is the process of discovering who and what she is capable of becoming, and just how far she’s willing to go.
What three words would you use to describe Eryn?
Snarky. Vulnerable. Badass.
Thanks so much, Judith, for the great insight into SOMT and your writing process. Now, for all you readers out there who’d like a sneak peak, visit SKIN OF MY TEETH EXCLUSIVE BONUS CONTENT!
